Top 5 Misconceptions about Architects

Setting the record straight on some architect myths!

People often have misconceptions about architects and think they are not accessible to them, I want to address some of these misconceptions today and help you gain a clearer picture of what architects do. With 15 years of experience as an architect, I’ve encountered just about every misconception imaginable!

Any other myths I can help clear up for you?

They don’t care about interiors

Many believe architects focus only on a building’s exterior and structure, neglecting interiors. However, in residential architecture the interior is usually in the forefront of the design for most architects.

Clients will mainly experience their home from the inside, so it’s crucial to consider the interior and not just the exterior.

While some may stop at designing built-in furniture / storage, others will help you with furniture layouts, finishes and colour schemes.

They always want to extend

Many think architects see extensions as a solution to all spatial problems. However, I, like many others, advocate for better use of existing space, focusing firstly on functionality and sustainability over unnecessary additional space.

If, however, the client’s brief cannot be achieved within the existing structure, a well-designed extension can unlock the flow of the house and create the client’s dream home.

They know how much a project is going to cost

People often think architects know the exact project cost from the start. While we can give estimates based on a rate per square meter, and make educated decisions based on your budget, costs are influenced by LOTS of variables.

The only way to establish the cost of your project is to get a Cost Plan from a Quantity Surveyor or to get a quote directly from a builder.

They go over budget

Architects are often blamed for budget overruns, but factors like site constraints, regulations, the age of the property, client changes, unforeseen site issues and economic shifts impact the costs more than anything.

Architects can make decisions at design stage that will add to the cost (such as removing structural walls or adding an extension), but most of the time this is driven by the client brief and the property itself.

They only work on big projects

Many think architects only take on large projects with big budgets. In reality, they can provide valuable input into a project of any scale.

There are any different architecture offices / studios / workshops to suit your needs and budget; it’s important that their vision aligns with yours.
